Restyle | Lace Overlay Mini Skirt

This weekend I gave my old (well worn) black jersey skater skirt from Topshop a bit of a spring makeover. 

I have worn this skirt loads as it goes with almost anything, but felt I wanted something a little different. I have always been a fan of the romantic/ gothic lace trend so decided to remake my skater skirt into a straight style skirt and stitch a pretty lace overlay over it too.

 You will need …

Old skirt 

Lace 1/2 meter – 1 meter will do depending on the length

Sewing machine

Thread

Scissors

Tape measure

Pins

My skirt started out as a skater style so to transform it into a straight skirt I took away excess floaty areas by sewing from the hem to waist band in triangle shapes until it fitted me well.

 To make the lace over lay…

Fold right sides of the lace together and cut around your skirt shape, leaving enough for seam allowances (1.5 cm) around the edges and a longer hem so your lace shows at the bottom.

With right sides of your lace together, sew the two side seams together leaving the top and bottom open. Turn your lace the right way out to reveal a basic skirt/tube shape.

With your original skirt the right way out slip the overlay over the skirt to check it fits then fold a seam allowance under at the waistband. My lace sits just below the original skirt waist band. Mark this on before flipping the lace over to stitch on the under side (the original skirt stays right side up, you are sewing in between the two layers) Then flip the lace back over to lay face up on your skirt and hide the stitching.
